鈥淭he anniversary of Warren G. Harding's election and Donald J. Trump鈥檚 re-election bid share more than simply landing a century apart,鈥 Philip G. Payne, chair of the university鈥檚 history department, wrote in . 鈥淚n both elections, Americans asked what it means to be an American in a changing world, changes that some Americans feel left out of.鈥
In his other paper, , Payne draws parallels between the emerging media platforms of the 1920s and
today鈥檚 media landscape, noting that Harding鈥檚 victory over James Cox in 1920 was the first time that presidential election results were announced over the radio.

Payne, who has taught at St. Bonaventure since 1998, is the author of (Ohio University Press, 2009) and (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2015).
鈥淒r. Payne鈥檚 papers exemplify the goals we had in mind when we established the Jandoli Institute last year,鈥 Richard A. Lee, the institute鈥檚 executive director, said. 鈥淏y tapping in to the expertise of the academic community,
