Dr. Chris Mackowski, professor of Journalism and Mass Communication and associate dean of undergraduate programs in the Jandoli School, has an article in the 2025 edition of the Journal of the Shenandoah Valley During the Civil War Era, a journal published by Shenandoah University’s McCormick Civil War Institute.

The article, “The Rise of Stonewall Jackson: Tracing the Transformation of Thomas Jonathan Jackson in Public Perception,” examines newspaper coverage of Jackson’s 1862 Valley Campaign and how Southern newspaper editors positively “over promoted” Jackson’s successes at a time when the Confederacy faced numerous military setbacks elsewhere.
